Siam Samrarn – best budget lunch in Brisbane

Food, glorious (Thai) food

Chicken with cashew nuts, rice and a glass of softdrink ... all mine for $9.90

The Markets, in West End

Inside (actually, outside) Siam Samrarn Thai Restaurant

People on the left, so turned to the right instead ... and clicked

So this gem has been around, but I discovered it only in the last couple of months.

Siam Samrarn Thai Restaurant is located at The Markets (79 Boundary Street, West End | 07 3844 9091), a once-beverage factory which has been converted into a shopping centre.

Indulging in Thai food, making it or eating it, has to be one of the most risk-free thing anyone ever does.  For there is no such thing as bad Thai food; Thai food is always good tucker!

So, on that count, Siam Samrarn is doing it “easy”.

But then they top it up with a few more things like:

  • Reasonable price – the $9.90 lunch special is a true bargain, considering the ample serving, the delicious dish … and don’t forget the free softdrink;
  • Quite a few choices for the lunch specials;
  • Quick and friendly service;
  • Clean, comfy seating outside (haven’t tried the inside yet — and what for?);
  • Excellent location – easily accessible by bus and right in the West End food precinct (which leaves you with plenty of options for your Plan B, in case you luck out on Siam Samrarn);
  • And don’t forget the FREE and ample parking.

Have just been sticking to the lunch specials (7 days, 11am – 2:30pm) but others who’ve tried the full menu have reached the same conclusion: Siam Samrarn is tops.

Now waiting for my (Thai) friend Ja’s next trip to Brissy to show off my new find ….

One sleep to Arnhem Land

One more sleep to my next ICV (Indigenous Community Volunteers) volunteering assignment in Nhulunbuy, NT.  Flying there via Cairns (not Darwin).

Already got my (full on!) itinerary – which includes visiting all the different communities (Gapuwiyak, Milingimbi, Yirrkala and island hopping to Elcho IslandGroote Eylandt and Bickerton Island), meeting Traditional Owners/Elders and observing/hearing first-hand the issues they’re trying to address with a new organisation.  Except for Yirrkala, I will be flying to get to all these places.

It’s out – and so am I.

Congratulations to those who made the initial shortlist to this, the second round of The Crunch.  The successful applicants will be announced on 23rd August by the Hon Mary Wooldridge, Victorian Minister for Community Services.

Looking forward to mid-August for feedback and suggested alternate pathways for progressing my social enterprise idea.
